Organization Description & HistoryCrisis & Counseling Centers was originally incorporated in 1970 as "Rap & Rescue." In its early days it operated out of a storefront location in the small town of Hallowell, Maine, just outside the capital city of Augusta. C&C currently employs 170 individuals in the following programs:
The agency's clinical programs operate out of six locations. The Augusta headquarters, which houses the main Crisis Mobile/Triage call center, the Outpatient/Intensive Outpatient department, and Administration. Four renovated houses located in Skowhegan, Waterville, Winslow and Augusta provide short-term crisis residential services as an alternative to emergency psychiatric hospitalization. An additional mobile crisis response unit operates out of the Skowhegan residential unit. Separate Skowhegan and Wateville offices house additional Outpatient/Intensive Outpatient services. Approximately 25 Outpatient/Intensive Outpatient clinicians (including psychotherapists, substance abuse counselors, psychiatrists, PAs and NPs) provide treatment of mental health, substance abuse and co-occurring disorders to between 800 and 900 individuals each year. The Co-Occurring Intensive Outpatient Program serves adults with substance dependence and psychiatric disorder and the Differentiated Substance Abuse Treatment (DSAT) program serves individuals with a substance dependence who are mandated to treatment in Kennebec County. C&C is also the provider of integrated healthcare services at Kennebec County Correctional Facility (Augusta) and Two Bridges Regional Jail (Wiscasset), with a staff comprised of NPs, PAs with MD oversight, nurses and med techs, correctional care workers, and substance abuse and mental health clinicians. Crisis & Counseling Centers is home to the G.E.A.R. Parent Support Network, staffed by a full time Program Director and five part-time Regional Parent Support Coordinators, who provide services on a statewide basis to parents of children with a wide range of behavioral health needs. Services include phone support through a toll-free number and local support groups and trainings. Most of the agency's resources, including approximately 90 staff members, are allocated to its Crisis services (mobile/triage, residential and outreach). Each month, approximately 1,000 individuals from Kennebec and Somerset counties are directly connected to Crisis & Counseling's mobile triage crisis unit, via the statewide hotline, as well as the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. Each month, 400-500 of these callers receive a face-to-face mental health assessment. A reflection of the Crisis program's commitment to providing responsive, accessible, client-centered service is its high rate of assessments done in the community (approximate 1/2) vs. in local emergency rooms. |
