Animal Wellness Awareness Resource Education

A.W.A.R.E. is a project of Crisis and Counseling Centers’ Community Advisory Committee.

Funding for this program provided in conjunction with Crisis and Counseling Centers in Augusta, Skowhegan and Waterville, Maine.

“Animals have feelings too”

A.W.A.R.E. is about caring for yourself by caring for your pet. What happens during an emergency when you can’t be at home? Plan the care for your pet with someone you trust.

Have you ever thought about what happens to your pet in an emergency situation? That answer is easy. Who thinks about "Ziggy" or "Stubby" when we can’t be at home? A.W.A.R.E. wants to suggest things you might keep in mind to prepare for the unexpected.

THE PLAN

Step 1 - Arrange for a contact person you trust.

Step 2 - Review the following with your contact person:

  • (a) where the pet(s) is going to stay
  • (b) food & med requirements and
  • (c) vet & shot updates.

PREPARATION
Give clear written instructions to your contact person. Post the information sheet to the right onto your refrigerator and/or in your wallet. Make periodic checks on pet carriers and other pet support items.

“I now have peace of mind due to what I learned from AWARE. They taught me how to plan for and be better prepared in case I am hospitalized.”

TAKE ACTION
Try to arrange a review of the steps needed with your contact person and be certain he or she is comfortable with the role they might have to play to help you. We all want what’s best for our pets.

“BE PREPARED”

Clip these out and hang one on your refrigerator and keep the other in your wallet.
